Photo of a Toucan

“I’ve never seen a photo of a toucan,” Ammery said at last. “Just paintings. And one time I did a puzzle of one, but that was just a painting too. And I was thinking, where did all these paintings come from if there’s like, no photos? Would anyone know if someone had just made a toucan up?”
“Maybe one person made-it-upped and fool evr’one wif’ his drawings,” the yellow kid said. “-and then evr’one else don’t know he made-it-upped and pretended all like they seen one too, and they start drawing’um.”

That was the most we’d ever heard the yellow kid say! Well, we just pondered that for a moment until Milky Jane piped up that she saw a toucan at a zoo, just plumb-out saw one. “It was in a cage,” she added helpfully. “-and it looked just like the paintings, just like Ammery said.”
And Ammery and all of us, we frowned at her because it had been a mighty good thought, that maybe some old man with too much time just painted a big-ass colorful bird and called it a toucan. It’s not like she could take it back, though. She saw the toucan, and Ammery hated her for it.
